AMADEA MORNINGSTAR

Examples of use in clinical practice and yoga training:

  1. One physician, an anesthesiologist, uses one of these techniques while preparing patients for surgery. She holds their feet and does the toe balance technique prior to surgery while she meets with them and talks about the upcoming procedure.
  2. A home care LPN uses the toe balance technique while meeting with hospice patients and their families. With the patient in bed and family members gathered, she holds the patient’s feet during family conferences.
  3. One physician (a psychiatrist) and his professional teaching partner (a yoga therapist) have been integrating the dosha calming mantras into their yoga and meditation classes which they lead at their local hospital.
  4. One nurse uses the five-pointed star technique to relieve tension around her patients’ necks and shoulders with gentle holds on the torso.
  5. One nutrition educator, working in a family practice physician’s office, teaches patients the simple Ayurvedic techniques presented here, such as not skipping meals, having the largest meal mid-day for best digestion, and drinking hot water to calm the stomach and mood.
  6. One physician in family practice now regularly instructs his patients in how to massage their own feet with olive oil as a way to calm and ground themselves.
