Amadea Morningstar’s Ayurvedic Polarity Therapy training program at Kripalu provided an outstanding opportunity to learn both the principles of Ayurveda and the application of these principles through Polarity Therapy. The complexity of Ayurveda can sometimes be daunting for new students but Amadea made these principles both accessible for beginning students and interesting for advanced students of Ayurveda. The program provided an excellent balance of theory and applying the theory through experiential sessions with partners. The elements, doshas, prakruti, vikruti, marmas, chakras, and bija mantras were explained and then followed by  hands-on Polarity Therapy bodywork sessions to promote balance and healing. These sessions were a great opportunity to apply and observe Ayurvedic principles, to practice Polarity therapy and get immediate feedback from Amadea and partners, and to receive Polarity Therapy.  Amadea also led the class in a daily morning Yoga session incorporating Mantra and Pranayama techniques.

Amadea is an outstanding and accessible teacher and her love of Ayurveda and Polarity Therapy are obvious and contagious. She enthusiastically shares her in-depth knowledge and experience of these disciplines with others, and her teachings are supplemented with handouts and recommendations for additional reading and study, often in the definitive book she authored entitled The Ayurvedic Guide to Polarity Therapy: Hands-on Healing. Amadea is also an internally recognized expert on Ayurvedic nutrition and it was wonderful that she also included teachings and information on nutrition in this program.

I am truly grateful to Amadea for sharing her tremendous knowledge of Ayurveda and Polarity Therapy through this program and I look forward to taking future educational programs with her.

My first introduction to Amadea’s work occurred one summer day in a health food store.  I picked up her classic cookbook Ayurveda Cooking for Westerners and purchased it excited to try some new recipes.  I wasn’t familiar with Polarity Therapy yet, but had a smathering of Ayurveda by way of a yoga teacher.  That year I made some of the dishes but my relationship to food hadn’t really shifted yet.

When I saw that she was coming to Kripalu a year later, I signed up still intrigued by Ayurveda and ever curious about Polarity Therapy.  I was also pregnant –a great motivation to get serious about self-care.

I consider what I learned from Amadea during the five -day course a turning point in my life.  As a school teacher, the norm is to deal with stress and illness via medication.  I have been able to quiet my life because of the things I learned from Amadea and I now feel I have more choices in dealing with my health.  Aside from the fountain of information (about) Ayurveda and Polarity Therapy in and of themselves, Amadea’s ability to transform knowledge, experience, and instill the understanding that observation and personal experience are as important as the ancient teachings left me with deep impressions that I am still exploring.  She is able to make delight of dense and complex information.

Two years later I am experimenting with the ephemeral nature of the doshas and food, and rereading her book on self-care as I prepare to balance motherhood, marriage, and teaching full time overseas.  Exploring some of the morning rituals like nasya, song, mantra, and feet oiling has made this time more of a curiosity in terms of the impact this care has on my day and ultimately son and husband. Also, I’ve begun singing the ram, shrim, and om mantras to my son at bedtime to help his doshas find their way home in time for his much needed rest.  It is a joy to share and explore with my family.

I am grateful for Amadea’s time, teachings, and books.   She is a rare and gifted sparkle of a soul.
